This isn't theoretical. Cybersecurity firm Sophos has tracked a series of attacks leveraging CVE-2024-40711 to create local administrator accounts (named "point") and deploy Fog and Akira ransomware. Attackers accessed targets through VPN gateways lacking multi-factor authentication, then used the Veeam exploit as a second-stage attack to move laterally through networks. In multiple incidents, threat actors were able to spawn processes, add users to the Administrators group, deploy malware to unprotected Hyper-V servers, and exfiltrate data using the Rclone utility.
