Born on April 6, 1938, in the village of Elangadu in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, Nammalvar grew up in a region steeped in agricultural traditions. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Annamalai University, he began his career in 1963 as a scientist at the Agricultural Regional Research Station in Kovilpatti. At the height of India's Green Revolution, his job was to persuade farmers to adopt hybrid seeds, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides. Yet Nammalvar quickly became disillusioned. He witnessed small farmers sinking into debt due to costly inputs and observed soil becoming barren and lifeless. Rather than persuading them to adopt these methods, he began to question their long-term viability.
