After the acoustic success, the band returned with their most abrasive and experimental record. Mar Adentro en la Sangre (Into the Sea of Blood) is a difficult, rewarding listen. Inspired by the poetry of and the prose of Alejandra Pizarnik , this album eschews radio-friendly structures in favor of sonic landscapes.
3. Babel (1996)
The story of Santa Sabina cannot be told without first understanding its essential core: the meeting of singer Rita Guerrero and bassist Alfonso "Poncho" Figueroa. In the late 80s, Guerrero moved to Mexico City to study theater, while Figueroa was part of a jazz group named "Los Psicotrópicos". The meeting was fateful. The group needed music for a theatrical play Guerrero was working on, and from that initial collaboration, a deep and unbreakable artistic affinity was born. The seed for Santa Sabina was planted.

Espiral serves as a perfect closing chapter for the band’s initial run. It is an album about accepting the end with dignity.

Babel is considered by many to be Santa Sabina's magnum opus. It was presented live at Mexico City's iconic Metropolitan Theatre. The album is a conceptual work inspired by the biblical story of the Tower of Babel and John Milton's Paradise Lost , exploring themes of confusion, the fall from grace, and the eternal human struggle for understanding. Musically, it is arguably their most ambitious and progressive work, with complex song structures and a dense, layered sound. The track "Estando aquí no estoy" remains one of their most beloved and frequently performed songs.
