This verse serves as a stark reminder of temporality. All the beauty and adornment mentioned in the previous verse will one day be reduced to a barren, lifeless, dust-filled plain (saʿeedan juruzan). This is a direct reference to the end of the world and the Day of Judgment, where everything of this world will be destroyed. By placing this certainty immediately after the concept of worldly adornment, the Quran provides a powerful antidote to arrogance, greed, and love of this world, reminding us that nothing in it is permanent.

The underlying message is clear: while the miracle of young men sleeping for centuries is astonishing, it is minor compared to the creation of the heavens, the earth, and the daily renewal of life. For a believer, the entire universe is an ongoing miracle. Verse 10: The Ultimate Supplication for Crisis

These verses establish the "Test of Life." All beauty on earth—nature, wealth, and status—is described as a temporary "adornment" meant to test who is best in conduct. Ultimately, this beauty will be reduced to "barren dust," emphasizing that only spiritual deeds remain.

"Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?" (Verse 9). The Quran is about to recount the famous story of the "Companions of the Cave" ( Aṣḥāb al-Kahf ), known in Christian tradition as the "Seven Sleepers of Ephesus". The story tells of a group of believing youths who fled a tyrannical, polytheistic king to preserve their faith, sought refuge in a cave, and miraculously slept for over 300 years. When they awoke, they found that the entire society had become believers.

Before analyzing, here are the verses in Arabic, transliteration, and a reliable English translation (Sahih International):
