After collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds, players could find hidden, larger rings to access new special stages. Completing these would transform the Chaos Emeralds into the , unlocking a transformation even more powerful than Super Sonic. While Super Sonic was nearly invincible and incredibly fast, Hyper Sonic pushed these abilities to an almost supernatural level. His defining trait became a rapidly cycling rainbow palette and a new "Hyper Flash" attack—a screen-nuking blast that could destroy every enemy on screen at once. It also granted unlimited flight and the ability to damage enemies by simply touching them while moving at high speed.
